During the COVID-19 pandemic, many kidney transplanted patients have struggled to access their medications. Some medications have been in short supply due to pharmaceutical companies being understaffed to adhere to social distancing. Other medications have been affected by distribution channels being disrupted during the pandemic. Some patients have had challenges affording medications due to loss of employment, health insurance, among other barriers.

Kidney Transplant

A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure to place a healthy kidney from a living or deceased donor into a person (recipient), whose kidneys no longer function properly. The transplanted kidney replaces the previously damaged kidneys to filter waste products, maintain fluid balance, and other functions to keep you healthy.

Living Donor

A Living Donor is anyone who is healthy and wishes to donate one of their kidneys. Living donors are tested to make sure that it is safe for them to donate a kidney.

Deceased Donor

A Deceased Donor is someone who has died. He or she agreed to donate his or her healthy organs before death or in some cases, the family of the donor agrees to donate the healthy organs of the family member.
